I am an Assistant Professor at the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies (RSCAS) of the European University Institute (EUI), where I co-direct the European Governance and Politics Programme (EGPP). My work sits at the intersection of political science and security studies and examines how geopolitical competition, domestic politics and international institutions interact to shape global order.
I lead the conflict-related Global Risks to the EU Survey and co-coordinate the EU Horizon project CitiSense – ‘Making Sense of EU Enlargement for, with and by Citizens’ (2026–2029).
My current research focuses on the European Union’s changing nature under conditions of non-peace and on the evolution of its role in the world. Bringing together European integration theory and security studies, my book project explores the emergence of a pan-European security strategy under the provisional title Total Defence: An EU Grand Strategy for the 21st Century.
Alongside research, I remain deeply committed to teaching. Since 2025, I have served as Visiting Professor at the College of Europe in Bruges, where I teach EU geopolitics and EU enlargement. Previously, I was Lecturer in ‘Risk in International Politics and Economics’ at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (2022–2024), where I also co-designed the first online Master’s programme in Global Risks and taught across fields ranging from comparative politics to research methods for evidence-based policy.
My academic path has been shaped by several formative research appointments, including a Fulbright Research Grant at Stanford University (2020) and a Max Weber Fellowship in the Department of Political and Social Sciences at the European University Institute (2020–2022).
Before academia, I worked as a junior foreign policy adviser to the Romanian Presidency during Russia’s annexation of Crimea – an experience that continues to inform my interest in security, strategy, and the relationship between scholarship and policy.
In 2021, I received the inaugural European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR) Rising Star Award.
